DoughDoug Haynes, Council Advisors Managing Director, Hazeltree CEO, knows the value of a dollar. His eclectic and successful career spans decades, including the founding of West Texas State Bank, and he has been building and managing companies in Texas for over 30 years. Doug created his latest company Hazeltree Properties, in 2001, focusing on multifamily properties. He has grown the company to 11 communities across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, totaling more than 3,500 apartment units. Doug’s newest venture is CrowdStreet, where he is an Executive Chairman helping investors invest in commercial real estate via a crowdfunding platform.

  1. Work Experience

Haynes is one of the leaders in commercial real estate investing. In 1985 he founded West Texas State Bank, with assets of $7 million, and by 1996, it had grown to $57 million and became one of the largest privately held banks in Texas. At that time, Doug sold the bank to TIB Financial Corp. for millions. A few years later, he established Central Texas Commercial Bank (CTCB) in 1998, which West Union Bank acquired in 2004. During his time at CTCB, Haynes directed the bank’s private client group, a $100 million portfolio of commercial property loans and deposits.

  1. Business Strategy

When inventing Hazeltree properties, Doug Haynes focused on multifamily properties because he saw additional opportunities to buy value and reduce risk by buying land at a discount and purchasing existing apartment buildings that had been undervalued or mismanaged. According to Doug, cash flow and capital preservation are the most critical factors for success in the real estate business. As in any industry, he says the keys are planning, hard work, and staying true to where you came from.

  1. Philanthropy

Doug Haynes has been involved in several philanthropic endeavors as a volunteer and donor. He was the chairman of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Austin, Texas, from 2010–2011. In 2015 he donated $500,000 to the oncology department at the University of Texas at Austin. The gift will help fund research on ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer. Doug is an active supporter of Give Kids the World (GKTW), which provides vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Doug Haynes is one of the business’s most successful real estate investors. His companies are expanding rapidly every year and are trusted by investors around the country.
