Dr Leen Kawas Discusses Advancements in Alzheimers Treatment

Dr. Leen Kawas is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. She is also a senior physician in the Mental Health and Aging program at The Ottawa Hospital.

Dr. Leen Kawas explains that this new model is not just about the person with age-related memory loss. It fundamentally rethinks how dementia and Alzheimer’s should be treated. It is also about helping caregivers to remain engaged. Today, many drugs are available to treat Alzheimer’s disease, but no one has found a cure yet. Since pharmaceutical companies cannot profit from providing drugs for these patients, they have been reluctant to invest in research. However, sooner or later, there will be treatments that can help people who suffer from this disease and their families.

Dr. Leen Kawas has studied Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders for over a decade and was awarded a prestigious Canada Research Chair in Neurodegenerative Diseases in 2004-2005. She has published over 30 peer-reviewed publications, including several book chapters and two scholarly monographs on Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases. She is also the author of Orphan Diseases of the Life Cycle and a pharmaceutical company consultant.

On 17 May 2009, Dr. Kawas was part of several experts who spoke out about the early onset Alzheimer’s disease in Chinese Australians and their families. The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, said that all Australians have equal rights to live free from discrimination and that he could not accept any complaints or suggestions of discrimination against people with Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Kawas has been interviewed on several radio and television stations to discuss her research. The following are some of the key TV interviews: In the media, she has been called one of Canada’s top experts in Alzheimer’s disease, the leading expert in neuroscience at the University of Ottawa, Nova Scotia’s Dr. Laura Kawas helps families cope with Alzheimer’s, The Star’s Dementia Expert Focuses On Caregivers Former Ottawa Hospital doctor fights Alzheimer’s.
