Randy Douthit on his life outside producing shows
Randy Douthit knew he would become a director and producer at a young age. He fell in love with TV at the age of just 4 while at his grandparent’s home. He started selling tickets at 9 and went on in his 20s to work for Portland’s KGW and then hold his daily talk show “Seattle Today.” Douthit is a Peabody Award winner and has also worked for CNN. One of the biggest highlights of his career is producing the longtime show “Judge Judy.” Fast forward to the present and he produces “Judy Justice.” He explains his day-to-day life includes talking on the phone, going to production meetings, reading cases, and editing shows. At the forefront of his mind is always giving the audience what they want. Randy Douthit wants to entertain and truly captivate an audience. A trend he sees today is the advancing of streaming and a break from traditional television. Something he recommends other entrepreneurs do that he does is meditate each day for an increasing amount of time as they get used to doing it. A strategy that has helped his business grow and that others can follow is to work diligently and not give up. Another aspect is being able to work well with others. Just like everyone else in life, the director has had some setbacks and failures such as an early cancellation of a show, but he abides by the fact that it passes and to work on another project. A book he recommends people should read is “The Secret of Light” by Walter Russell published in the 50s.
Randy Douthit is a supporter of giving back in the form of criminal justice reform. The producer believes he knows a thing or two about the law producing “Judge Judy.” He believes sometimes people are just not given the same opportunities and can stray along the wrong path in life. Some of the ways he has given back are by donating money to food banks and donating to a public pro bono law firm named Public Counsel.
